Before the drone video, a little sneaker story. with Joe in a shop. He is shooting a video called sneaker shopping with complex. They talked sneakers for one hour. Casey bought 3 more sneaker pairs, Candice will hate him. They even fly a drone inside the shop. Perfect weather. Perfect to unbox and test the Skydio R1. First, unboxing. Drone, battery, cables, charger, propellers. The drone is flat bug big, not foldable. Same footprint as a phantom 4. Aluminum and carbon fiber. The selling point is that it has 13 cameras on it and the best supposed AI. It is supposed to self fly, following you without any intervention. Outside in a park with lots of trees. Overhanging trees, branches on both sides. No way Casey can fly a normal regular drone here. His friend Lance with his citibike will be the subject the drone has to follow. Casey follows him to show what the drone is doing. Footage from the drone, avoiding every tree, going up and down. Casey is impressed, weaving through the trees. Amazing, almost like the Boston Dynamics robotics videos. Casey shows one with a robot dog opening a door. This is a huge step up, a quantum leap from what dji makes. The not so great: everything else. The size and form factor. It also lacks the cinematics capabilities. The range is limited by smartphone wifi, the movements are imprecise. The image is great, sharp 4K, but with the really wide angle the videos are just "me in the center or a frame" with jerky movements. The price $2500. It is more exeensive than a phantom 4 plus a mavic pro + one month eating at McDonalds. He emailed the company, they responded that he must look at this drone as a first generation Tesla, to showcase what it is capable of. The future should be exciting. Casey would love to see dji buy the technology and mix the skydio tech with the spark or mavic sized drones. Drone fantasy.
